A fresh batch of PS5 stock was promised in-store at GameStop this Black Friday, and a couple of PlayStation fans were so desperate to get their hands on the next-gen console, they brought their beds and slept outside their local store for 24 hours. ABC reporter Eugene Daniel stumbled upon the desperate gamers, who revealed they’d skipped Thanksgiving dinner in order to wait in line.
Apparently, this wasn’t uncommon in the United States this week, as queues formed outside GameStop all over the country, with the promise of new PS5 consoles luring fans away from family and an oven-roasted turkey. You’ve got to respect the dedication – although after going to this much trouble, we sincerely hope no one went home empty handed.
Fortunately for this sleepy pair in Norfolk, they got their next-gen console in the end. Above, they’re pictured hugging their brand new PS5s after camping outside for 24 hours. Time for an all-night session on Demon’s Souls, we reckon.

I can assure you many many went home empty handed and frustrated after going to such silly lengths.
Some say dedication, I say utter stupidity given the worldwide pandemic. Please please get your priorities straight. The PS5 will be back in stock, your nan won’t be back in stock if she pops her clogs.
Yeah no, at that point I would rather just pay the $1,800 on ebay to the scum then camp outside and risk getting a cold/flu/covid 😐
@nessisonett Well said mate.
No way I could sleep in front of a store, but to bring your own bed?
Some people are horrible.the coronavirus is still going on and people are camping outside.for the ps5 come on dog ps5 will be in stock again.or keep playing your ps4 its no big deal.health is the key for 2020.be patient.word up son
Yea man, I know I put in the effort to preorder mine online, but if I have to make a choice between doing this and not getting one. That ps5 isn't that much of a must buy right now to spur me into this action... Especially in this climate we've had in 2020.
I like how homeless people can get rounded up and thrown in jail for sleeping in a park but dudes with so much time on their hands they can choose to sleep outside of GameStop for a $500 console during a pandemic get a fluff piece.
Had one since 19th. Used it more today than previous week combined. Miles Morales and Godfall. Only thing i like is the controller tbh (platinum astrobot). It's just another console for me.
I waited for two years to buy my first Nintendo Switch while everyone was going crazy to get them during launch. I can wait that much longer or more for a bloody PS5.
@Juanalf Maybe don't do either?
I don't understand this culture at all. I'm sorry.
They're built different 😈
Embarrassing tbh, like seriously
@Juanalf Just be patient and finish your ps4 backlog, don't give those scalper a-hole a cent of your money.
Sony will be stocking ps5 soon, it's not like ps5 is a $200 wii, after maybe 3-4 month I think the stock availability will be normal again.
@nessisonett last time I checked COVID had a 99.8 percent recovery rate not death rate.
@nessisonett it’s outside and nobody is packed together. I’m careful of the virus, and I camped outside GS for 12 hours to get a pre-order. I’m pretty sure I didn’t get it since I have family that would be less asymptotic, which is also why I’m careful.
And you say having the Joker as a phone wallpaper like it’s actually supposed to be some sort of insult.
Why yes, that is touchingly pathetic. Rather than do that, they could exercise some uncommon sense and just wait a few months to get one instead? You know, when supply catches up with demand, rather than looking like desperate no-lifers.
Still, nice to see Americans choosing an arguably superior Japanese made product rather than the homegrown one with no new games.
@zupertramp why does it bother you? They chose to go to these lengths to get one of the two available and did. Who are you to judge them? Are you so morally superior and high and mighty?
@playstation1995 last time I checked Covid wasn’t an automatic death sentence. Keep spreading the fear over a virus with a 99.8 percent recovery rate
@wiiware Oh I said I rather not that I will, I'm waiting for it so hopefully there's plenty of supply by the time Rachet & clank comes out.
8 consoles (2 PS5 and 6 Xbox) is all the store had in stock. 8.
Everyone I talked to there was saying the same thing: this was their only real chance to get a console because all the bots are sucking them up.
Everyone social distanced. Everyone wore masks. Everyone was responsible.
I walked away empty-handed.
Moral of the story: it’s time to stop making online-only the only way to get these machines.
Type PlayStation 5 into eBay search and there are over 10K listings and not one of them is selling one for a normal price. 10K+ PS5's that are being held hostage by scalpers. Yet, all Sony and Microsoft could give to stores was a measly 8 consoles between them.
I know I will get a console eventually - I mean, I still didn't plan to get one until around March anyways; but it's the principle of it all now.
@Juanalf Yup, and as a bonus for our patience, some of the ps5 games should be already discounted when there's more ps5 in stock 😃
Omg guys stay at home stay safe who cares we all have a playstation 4 . Just wait til Sony has the PlayStation 5 out in force and don't worry about the scalpers if we all just don't pay their silly prices they will go away. I was lucky to get a series X and playing an old game on it watch dogs. . Will be getting Yakuza like a dragon for Christmas , have cyberpunk on the PS4 to look forward to! So relax don't worry save your money for more games when you get your ps5! That's what I plan to do ☺️
They do look cosy lol , hope it stays dry for them
@jmac1686 Long term effects are still being learned and not fully known. It's far more nuanced than a simple recovery rate, which is still not absolute.
@EVIL-C People seem to be confusing ‘recovered’ with ‘not dead’.
This makes me embarrassed to be an American. I truly hate Black Friday and the ridiculous need to wait outside of a store for a day or two just to get something. I felt the pre-COVID. Now, in today’s climate, this shows you care more about a video game console than you do about your health and that of your loved ones. Stay home. Stay safe. Keep your friends and family safe. Stop allowing this ridiculous day to be a thing.
@jmac1686 You're one of these anti-mask nutters, aren't you?
Why both of these guys bought 2 PS5s?. Keep one and sell another for profit? Gamestop should limit 1 console per person.
Good god.... Why the hell are you camping outside?!
It's not that serious man.
I stayed online for 11hours hitting the refresh button from 4 stores after the price reveal show. After about 5 hours I was already thinking about camping outside a store. Even planed out getting a cheap one man tent and zipping up inside it with a mask and my PS Vita. Because I didn't give up online I got one and did not have to go that far.
That sucks, i got mine delivered to my house through playstation direct. Glad i preordered 2 months ago.
Meanwhile, I have pretty much nearly completed my ps4 collection of wanted games via super sales and end of life cycle prices on physicals. The loading speeds are great, unless you have to use hours of your time waiting outside a store, anyway. Enjoy the 20 or so ps5 games? I'll just wait until the end of next year.
I actually tried my luck in spite of knowing I wouldn't probably get one.. needless to say I didn't stay out all night I left the house around 6 am cause they opened at 7 went by one game stop saw the long line didn't even get out just left to another location while people was speeding pass me and running red lights to get to the next location ... dummies..😒..when I got there the line was twice as long.. didn't even get out the car ..two people got in after that they was out😆...people sped off mad as hell...one guy I actually saw crying walking back to his car..🤨
While I wouldn’t go out in this pandemic (I had a buddy who considered it but didn’t for the pandemic), I have stayed out all night for a new tv in the past. It was with the same buddy.
It was about 10 years ago. We brought a tv and Xbox360 and plugged them in to an external outlet at the store. We got some greasy fast food and had a great time playing left 4 dead all night. One of the funnest times I have had
Never understood this. Just wait till there in stock on a consistent basis.
@jmac1686 the numbers is the US tell a different story. Almost 13 million people were infected, 263.000 reported dead. This is a death rate of 2% for the US, not 0,2%.
But it's ok, take the global numbers and feel safe. Don't take local situations into consideration! The world just makes a big fuss over Covid for nothing!
@jmac1686 It certainly wasn't my intention to draw anyone's ire. My comment wasn't so much about the people camping out; I just find society's reactions to these contrasting situations bizarre.
I can assure you millions went home empty handed why well because the stores neglected to tell everyone they had 2 per store how can you hype the world up and crush it just like that just follow social distancing guide lines sell them in stores 1 per customer how hard is this to do
@TG16_IS_BAE I got my Switch launch day kind of on a whim. We'd heard they were sold out everywhere, but my fiancée and I were out and about, passed a Best Buy.. went inside and they had no line and a display with 9 Switches so we bought two, grabbed Zelda and 1, 2 Switch (regret) and went home. It was literally the only time I've ever bought a console on launch day and no thought or effort went into the procurement (beyond the expenditure itself). But if they'd been out of stock, I definitely would have waited until they were casually available some time later.
I'm perfectly content waiting any amount of time until the PS5 is readily available to get it. I can't imagine going to lengths like this for ANY console, but particularly this generation when I still have 10+ PS4 games to play through that I'm hyped for and there's literally nothing on PS5 out now that I want. The handful of games I'm interested in are on PS4 anyway and I'm not even buying those because I'm happy with the games I have. That and I've got a good few Switch and PC games I'm working through as well. I don't think I have any games I'm buying in the next three months.
There are many reasons i would not want to bring my mattress to GameStop and sleep in front of it. Covid is #20.
Im not going to lie i camp when gta 5 came out but that was ps3 n i waited 30 hours to get the ps5 how did i fault i was like its my last chance if god tells me its not my turn to get it i told myself if i get it i buy it but if i dont get it i just play my ps4 n xbox n just play get some more games year to 3 month subscription n i thought to myself when i walked empty handed what if there was no covid what if i vision myself having it in stores but i give things times but i thought it was the time for me getting one so i said ima go home after 30 hours of no sleep thinking it was my turn to get one i just wait they need to fix the ps5 anyways im like my ps4 runs like new still no loud fans run smooth the faster load time its awesome but im not going to do that anymore risk my health for a console target told me to stick around walmart said there was none only online do i want it yes but the reason i went to wait to get one because im tired of online only n scalpers taking from people who deserves it n kids family n friends... Stay away from Twitter everything they need to give people who has gamertag a reservation when restock come nobody is talking about that n sony n Microsoft ain't doing that people think its sony is on both sides if they had 10 n didn't want to sell it or whatever the case its messed up ... I sleep in my car lol not by the door i think people should of went home but people said target walmart best buy n they all online only but some said they would sell it but walmart dont want to sell it wow
There is nothing I would do this for. And I love gaming.
We're also in the middle of a pandemic, so there's that.
I'd safely sit home and hit refresh on a store's webpage. It would take an incredibly enticing launch title for me to do even that
Good for them, showing real determination there mixed with a little stupidity for good measure!
To all the moralisers on here, boo! Covid isn't fun but to the vast majority of people it's nowhere near fatal. I wear a mask when required but that's about it.
“You’ve got to respect the dedication“
You really don’t, y’know.
Nope, I just can’t do it. We got a pandemic out here and I don’t need a PS5 that bad.
Imagine if they overslept that morning.
@jmac1686. Its dumb.and your sentence dont make no sence.i rather wait month or years to get a ps5 than waiting .camping.with the virus going on.word up don
@jmac1686. Its a bad move.word up son
@kidBODY God bless America 🤦♂️
@Harlem4ever93 this really hurt my head
@playstation1995 do you like cameo?
Wasting a whole day of your life for the remote chance of forking over half a grand. Dire.
Time is my most valuable resource. So let's say they saved about $1000 off scalp price by waiting 24 hours. That's like $42 an hour. I can see how it seems worth it to someone who lacks patience, which gamers are not well known for in the first place. The real jerks are Gamestop corporate for making them available in store when Sony specifically didn't want to physically stock retailers due to the pandemic. And also any Gamestop location employees who didn't go out to the line and say, "Hey guys, I've only got 2 of these. So if you're 3rd or later in line, you're wasting your time."
@deathaxe Interesting theory about the Roman Empire............Here is another one after the deadliest pandemic recorded in human history the Black Death it triggered the Peasants' Revolt......2020 in China is the year of the 🐀
@Sammerine
Can you imagine queueing all night like that and the chap in front of you buys 2 of them and then you're told they've just sold out.
That would be annoying.
I pre-ordered a ps 5 and have had it since the day it came out. I purchased a dynamite tv a few months before to get ready and you know what? Ahh..I should of not traded in my ps 4 and kept my money. There really isn't much to play that I couldn't of played on my ps 4 and besides the load times, there honestly isn't that much difference from the ps 4 pro..I could have spent that money better elsewhere but at the same time I remember how it was when I didn't have it in my hands! I wanted it bad!
@Deltath That’s awesome! Sometimes you get lucky!
😶-My buddy is a GameStop store manager, and he had only 2 Bundled Standard disc PS5's and 4 XBOX's, 2 digital S and 2 series X consoles for Black Friday.
His store is in a Large Mall and security had a hard time keeping a hopeful future PS5 owning crowd of people from entering the Mall before it opened at 7am, so 2 of them bum rushed the security guards and got by them, and ran to my buddy's store and starting beating the sh*t outta the closed GLASS doors and asking him how many PS5's he had for sale right before the security guards caught up and chased after them again.
Needless to say they didn't get anything after pulling such a futile stunt, except for being ejected completely from the property of the Mall.
People are at a complete non-thinking frenzy when it comes to getting Sony's New next Gen Hardware.
@Number09 @deathaxe The gladiatorial games were also at their peak right before the fall of the Roman Empire, which I’ve long considered have a contemporary cousin in shows like X Factor etc. Both built around the concept of entertaining the masses with other peoples misfortune.
OT, I think what irritates me most about this story is that they took bloody beds with them, which was so obviously done to get attention.
@Sladey69. I do.but i l8ke old school rap music better.im from new york.so thats the way we talk.word up son
Its funny, I pre ordered mine in June, off a certain website in June here in Sweden,
Never even worried about it or tought about till a week before.
I'm glad I did id hate to have go through all this crap to get 1, but bringing your bed and camping out there for a chance its abit ridiculas, unless your in top 5 people just go home and wait
Even if I didn't get mine I wouldn't be doing this, its really not that important
Not tagging anyone out of curteousy. I'm not usually one to be gaslit by ignorant comments but it is clear that some people have not been personally impacted by the pandemic and are not capable of empathy. As some others have said, looking only at worldwide recovery rate is an extremely myopic view and are not considering the physical (disease related or otherwise) and emotional toll this is having on the world at large and at home (front-line workers forced to put themselves at risk every day, health care workers who do the same, those who are experiencing economic or other hardships). Hoping that this message resonates and that people can be a little more considerate before they make their comments. That and I hope that people are lucky enough to have their and their family's health AND to have fun gaming this holiday season!
@jmac1686 ignorance intensifies
@TBubs311 Not to take anything away from your point, which I agree with - I just don't understand humans. Why can't it just be - "wear a mask and be considerate of your actions so that you can be compassionate to those around you" ... "Okay, sure". Why does it not just end there?
Why do some people have to then delve into the finer points and bring up statistics and numbers and other nonsense just to avoid being a kind person?
@God_of_Nowt So sorry for your loss. I can't even imagine what you must be going through. My condolences.
I have had more than a few family members whove contracted it, and its scary even in the mild circumstances because we just know so little about the illness and what it might mean for their health down the line.
@TheIdleCritic
Very much agree with your sentiment. Should be a pretty straightforward thing to wear a mask to be safer. However certain (soon to be former) world leaders decided to politicize that. We now live in a world where there are facts and also alternative facts when the science isn't suited to one's beliefs, political or otherwise.
@nessisonett What has The Joker got to do with this? He's my favourite comic villain and he's my wallpaper but no way in hell would i do what these morons are doing, i'm going to wait until next year when they're easier to get.
In an ideal world all those scalped consoles would sit on eBay or wherever and remain unsold, as the sellers steadily dropped the prices, until eventually they were selling for way under RRP... you know, like the way it should be. 😂
Sadly you just know there are gonna be parents giving into their kids here and paying twice what the consoles are worth so the cycle will continue.
@WallyWest Incels are in love with the Joker. Not comics fans like you or me mind, more like the Heath Ledger version. He’s become a rallying cry for right-wing anti-mask nutters.
@mazzel There was 13 million infected in the US yes, but the total population of the US is like 370 million people. So the percent of infected is 5% in the US. The total of 263k deceased from 370 million population, that's 0.09%. If you want to use the 5% infected rate its still only 3.03%. Fractions of fractions are what you are afraid of.
@HUMPERDOO I stopped watching X Factor when an Evening's entertainment turned into a little girl crying that was enough for me when the misses put's it on now I make my excuses and leave.
As for the pavement squatters for once I am speechless 🙄
@God_of_Nowt nice one blue that should keep the ones that doubt quiet.
@God_of_Nowt Yes that what I'm talking about, people are afraid of fractions of a fraction of the population. its a very low rate.
@God_of_Nowt true mate well said.
@GamingVeteran The problem with throwing statistics around like that is it that it feeds the narrative that Covid is something we can just ignore. It's clearly not.
As has been pointed out we don't really know how many are really infected, we haven't tested everyone. We do know that the more we test the more we find. We also know there's potential for huge long-term effects that are only just becoming apparent.
I don't know why people can't show a bit of restraint. Our understanding of it is improving and vaccines are not far away.
@Juanalf No, you're part of the problem.
You got to love people with their new virtue signal we are in a pandemic from COVID19, COVID has a very high survival rate it's the elderly and people with illnesses that need to be careful. Britain 2020 around 55,000 deaths from COVID19, the amount of debt Britain has racked up will indebt generations to come. And that's before you talk about the deaths from the lockdown's, the first lockdown cost around 25,000 deaths from Cancer, suicide etc and they reckon the numbers in the end will be higher than deaths from COVID itself. So why did I say the new virtual signal? Back in 2018 we had a very bad flu year a flu epidemic where 64,000 people died, and hardly anyone even noticed.
@God_of_Nowt Ok so maybe you and your friend both did have it (if that even is true, lets be honest we both know how the internet is). That just means you both were a part of that small percentage, doesnt mean it still isnt small.
You will eventually get a PS5 people, it's not the end of the world to not have one. I don't and I am ay okay sticking to my PS4 for now. Your health is way way more important.
@Jaz007 Its just silly too sleep outside for something like this. With this pandemic there is still no store who can come up with a normal way of selling the console. 🤪
@banacheck Only no lockdown no precautions i dont want too know what would have happend then.
@God_of_Nowt God that's a tough and heartbreaking story, I really feel for you and hope that your health continues to improve. Stay safe and best of luck!
Most of my family unlucky enough to contract it have had mild symptoms luckily, but I do have an uncle who has been struggling with it over the last couple weeks where it's been touch and go, which has been really tough on the rest of my family.
I'm done with the political discourse as well. You can lead a horse to water but can't make 'em drink. I understand that everyone has sacrificed or lost something because of this pandemic or its downstream impacts. I wish everyone a safe holiday.
@God_of_Nowt Totally with you, well said. Sorry to hear about your friend. I’ve not lost anyone close yet, but I empathize.
The basic issue, as you say, is the selfishness of society at large. It seems people don’t really care about anyone but their own selfish interests anymore. I mean at its core, I’m pro-capitalism and against excessive centralized governing regulation, but that assumes a society with basic human decency. If we don’t have that, then I think we have the right to call out injudiciousness and irresponsibility when we see it, especially when the public good is being sacrificed.
Now a bunch of gamers camping out for a PS5 is unlikely to result in moving the needle on the pandemic, but it is a bad look, just like some of the stores having their big door-busting sales that brought crowds of people together.
For those who disregard the significance of the virus, I sure hope they don’t need a hospital bed anytime soon when they get some other random health mishap and find out they are out of luck because the hospitals are full. They seem to have forgot what it was like in Italy and New York early on when we weren’t social distancing and masking. It was compared to battlefield medicine trying to prioritize and ration who they could choose to save and who to let die. It was awful.
In these crazy times I dont see any real harm with them camping outside if those people are fine with it good on them . Sorry but there outside not on top of each other . And lets face it we can still go to work everyday shops everyday schools collage. I wouldn't pay 1 pence over for a ps5 and there are a lot on here that have . And all I here scum scalpers but the people buying them are the real problem stop buying them simple ! not hard to understand. Yes it may make some kids Christmas but paying over the odds perfectic. Put the money aside for ps5 and buy them somthing else the get ps5 when in stock ...
@nessisonett Well to be fair, they shouldn't be visiting their nan anyway so it wouldn't really matter. Unless they took their nan with them for company or to carry the PS5 home for them.
Absolute idiots who need to grow up.
@jmac1686 270,000 people could care less what you say about the survival rate...Doesn't matter what health issues they had before Covid, the FACT is they were living just fine with those health issues before besides the other fact that its 270,000 people in 8 months..12,500 people died of swine flu, over the course of over a year.....Don't seem to recall a time where almost a half million people died of the flu in one country
@GamingVeteran What's your point? I was correcting the guy on the death rate number. If you always calculate the death rate using the world's population, everything has a 0,000% death rate. The difference of death rate and how many people die of something is a difference.
In addition, you base your argumentation on past numbers, too. Doing all this lock downs and safety measures is to keep the numbers from rising. Your suggestions and argumentation will lead to rising numbers and then the statistics will kick your ass. No one wants this, not even you. I'm sure about that!
I lost my driver’s license last week. I drove by the DMV and saw the LINES extending outside the door. This article has inspired me! 😂
And then they miss out because they sleep in and the line just goes around them
Sad *****. And yes this is intended to offend, that way you may realise how stupid it is to waste your time like this.
I was one of those people who camped out. I was literally out there for exactly 24 hours, and I did walk away with 1 of the 2 consoles they had. The people online were pissed. Honestly once I purchased it, I left that store very quickly, no eye contact, and sped away. I honestly think what’s going on with the scalpers is a travesty. It’s just wrong. Honestly, I’ve considered selling my PS5, at a very reasonable price, 600$ tops, just because there needs to be someone out there who does that. The principal of it. I’m curious, would there be any takers? I’m in Phoenix AZ, would only meet in person, at my bank, and cash would be exchanged only. Someone in this universe needs to be that guy. I don’t really want to sell it, I like it. But it’s honestly a compelling thought. I work full time and only have time to play it maybe 5 hours a week. Hmmmm.
